Initially, I thought why would anyone want to go to Wyandotte Oklahoma to attend a Post-Apocalypse festival? It’s in the middle of nowhere.
Then I looked at a map and realized one vital aspect of the location. It is right in the middle of the United States. A one-day road trip filled with fantastic points of interest along the way.
No matter what your starting point, the ride is filled with unique roadside attractions, Museums, and other natural and historical monuments.
You can take a photo in front of Walter White’s home from Breaking Bad or visit one of the locations the Film “Big Fish” depending on where you are coming from.
Absolutely perfect for the more adventurous travelers.
I’ve made a small list at the bottom of this article that shows some but not all of the attractions of the drive from the four corners of the Continental United States.
I could have put even more, but I just can’t dedicate a week to comb everything that you could stop and see along the way.
Sure, WW is the most extensive Post-Apo festival in the world, but not everyone can dedicate nearly a week of driving to and from the location. The other fact is not all Post-Apocalyptic settings are of the Mad Max variety. Not everyone wants to sweat half to death in the desert for several days.
Atomic Falls Venue in itself is pretty amazing. Hosted at the D-Day Adventure Park. Throughout the massive 1200 Acre Park crashed helicopters, planes, boats and other abandoned military vehicles make it look as if the shattered shattered buildings were built upon what could have been the last battle of the Apocalypse.
Bartertown, Mission Booth. There is a Casino at the event which apparently is pretty essential to have in Wyandotte.
As well as lots and lots of drinking. Some of which is served at the Chug and Slug which can also be seen at WW serving up home brew and Nuka Cherry.
It is a more relaxed atmosphere, more of a gathering of friends that like to party than a full-scale riot. Don’t get me wrong, there are enough activities to keep you entertained. Although, you can just chill a little whenever the mood strikes and enjoy the scenery of an incredibly beautiful area.
Many of the founders of other Post-Apocalypse Festivals have routinely visited because it is an easy drive from the East Coast Nukelanta and Aftermath Festivals. Making the event even better with these experts of the craft of Post-
Tribes from Oklahoma, Alabama, and Kansas make the pilgrimage to the event. Most offering up their own mini-events. Like the Canadian Invasion serving up Poutine and the River Rats handling Boffer Fights.
So it is already populated with exceptional outfits and characters. Hundreds of people are attending each year, and it is growing in attendance. Much like the way WW did in its first years.
There is even a Tank and a couple of APCs which the owner of the venue offers up for rides and photo ops. Last year, Atomic Falls was able to up the ante by running over a car with the Tank.
But probably the best bonus at the event and location is that there are 2 shower houses with working toilets. So you can enjoy the Apocalypse without smelling like it.
The event is fully immersive. One of the rules being that anyone in a public area must be attired in Wasteland clothing. Even if it is, as they call it “Wasteland Casual” (which amuses me to no end I must admit.)
It is held every year from May 29th through June 2nd, usually a reasonable time to take off from work.
So make your Post-Apo uniform if you haven’t already and go. Become the Apocalypse version of yourself for a few days and make some new friends from across the U.S. Enjoy yourself and have a Nuclear Blast at Atomic Falls.
Below is the list of some interesting points along the way from various starting points in the U.S. If you would like a list of sites from your major city email a request to Survivors@apostapocalypse.com or Join our new Facebook Page. Just don’t ask for attractions from Schitt’s Creek, Pennsyltucky of some bullshit like that.
