Have you ever read H.P. Lovecraft and wished that they would make a movie based on one of his books that didn’t completely suck?
Wish and want no longer.
Although it doesn’t follow the plot of any of H.P.’s writings, the presence of the Godfather of Eldritch Otherworldly Horror is clearly present.
Mad cultists, unspeakable horrors, a zealous religious leader destined to open a gate to another world where Old Unknown or Forgotten Gods seek to destroy all humanity and claim our world as their own.
iWritten by and directed by Steven Kostanski, The film begins in a Rob Zombie-
When they arrive at a local hospital that is a few days shy of being shuttered, a series of events so unspeakable begin that you are left wondering just what will happen next.
A small town policeman seeks to maintain order.
A hospital staff tries to remain safe and sane in the presence of wildly unpredictable stand-offs.
A pair of hunters attempt to seek revenge.
In the midst, the ever-present danger of a group of insane cultists try to gain entry into the hospital and do the work of some mysterious entity/
The quality of the special effects is outstanding.
The plotline if any holes are present, which I didn’t notice, is swallowed up by the impending dread that is felt almost immediately in the movie.
By the end of the film, you are left in high anticipation as it finally becomes clear who and what is pulling strings.
The action is fast paced, and as the film revs up to speed, you are left with a full-throttle flick with the absolute best sense of imminent disaster that I have seen in a very long time.
It is a small budget film, but it certainly doesn’t feel like one.
There may be a moment or two when creature effects don’t quite hit the mark but taken as a whole the film shines.
You feel that just off-screen there is some incredible menace, some horrible terror that is even beyond imagining of what you see on screen.
If you are a Lovecraft fan or love the old school 80’s horror movies when they were relevant or even “Stranger Things” then this is definitely a film to watch.
The apocalypse is only one slip away unknown to the watcher until the final moments when we are left wondering, “What happens next?”
